Volunteers of a 220-acre nature preserve in LaRue County have created an event to show their appreciation for veterans.

The Veterans and Wounded Warriors Appreciation Day will be noon to 5 p.m., Saturday at the LaRue County Environmental Center at 635 Leafdale Road in Hodgenville.

Oscar McGuffey, who manages the volunteers at the preserve, said he’s hoping this will end up being an annual event.

Food will be provided for free to veterans and their families with it being supplied by community members. He said there will be enough food for about 150 people.

McGuffey said attendees will be bringing in pictures of their deceased loved ones who served in the military, and they will be put inside the educational center. He said he’d like the event to be a teaching moment as well.

“We’re telling people to bring their children and try to explain to them what this is all about,” he said.

The event will have members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars singing the National Anthem. Also, McGuffey said a local 28-year veteran who served three tours in the Middle East will read the names of veterans in the area who have died.

State Sen. Adrienne Southworth, R-Lawrenceburg, also will speak at the event.

McGuffey said he and the volunteers wanted to have an event to support veterans spiritually and emotionally, and let them that people do care about them.
