After nearly 35 years at its location at 3019 Ring Road, Kentucky School Service is on the move.
Russell Strange, owner of KSS, said the business will relocate to a space in Lakeshore Plaza on North Dixie Avenue next to Planet Fitness. The move likely will happen in early April, he said.
The new location will be more compact with about 9,000-square-feet compared to the current 33,000-square-feet, Strange said.
“We’re going to downsize and not have as much inventory,” he said.
Kentucky School Service, which has been at its Ring Road location since 1985, sells teaching aids, educational toys and games, and school supplies. The store also has a Breckenridge Lane location in Louisville.
Strange said he sold the Ring Road building to Tim Aulbach, an Elizabethtown real estate developer, but declined to say how much he sold it for. Aulbach confirmed he is in the process of purchasing the building, but noted the sale on the building hasn’t closed and declined to discuss the deal further.
According to Hardin County property records, the building last was sold for $980,000 in 2002.
Strange said he was not emotional about moving.
“It’s time for me to downsize,” said Strange, whose parents started the business. “There’s nobody else coming along behind me in my family to pass it off to.”
Strange said employees will move to the Lakeshore Plaza location.
As a result of the move, merchandise in the warehouse is half price and merchandise in the retail store is 20 percent off.
The warehouse portion of the store is in the back of the building, behind the retail showroom.
