The sixth annual Hardin County AM Rotary Club Roktoberfest is canceled.
Roktoberfest 2020 has been called off by organizers, another festival event silenced in Hardin County because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It was a tough decision, but we feel that it’s the right thing to do,” said Rick Walters, the club’s executive secretary. “There is so much uncertainty with the virus. We are seeing more spikes in cases, most coming from the congregation of large groups. We did not want to have that large group and be the cause of an outbreak.
“The success of Roktoberfest has been from the help of our local business sponsors, and we didn’t feel right going to them and asking for sponsorship money after what they have gone through so far this year,” he added.
Roktoberfest, which features bands as entertainment in downtown Elizabethtown, was a fundraiser for the Hardin County AM Rotary Club with proceeds going to community nonprofit organizations and scholarships.
“With all the uncertainty going on with the virus, and trying to keep crowds down and social distancing, we thought it best to follow suit of all the other events that also are canceling,” Walters said.
This year’s event was set for Sept. 26 and next year’s is scheduled for Sept. 18.
“We plan on being back next September, bigger and better,” Walters said.
