As their children grow, many local families have used a seasonal children’s consignment sale as a way to clean out closets or search for new slightly worn outfits.

The one-week-only pop-up store known as Kentucky Kids Consignment will fill the Bluegrass Sportsplex this week with children’s items, all for sale on behalf of 900 area families, according to Jennifer Upton, who directs the program.

Just like the closets, toy boxes, garages and basements of families selling their outgrown items, the sale itself was busting at the seams at Pritchard Community Center when it relocated four seasons ago to the Bluegrass Sportsplex on Peterson Drive in Elizabethtown.

An anticipated 95,000 items will be spread across the soccer field and basketball courts of the 50,000-square-foot space, according to Upton, a Hardin County native.

In addition to clothing and shoes for infants to tweens, the sale features books, toys of all types, sports equipment, nursery and toddler furniture, baby gear and some household furniture andhome decor items.

All items for sale are consigned by individual area families who prepare, tag and price their own items at home using an online tagging system, which also tracks sales each day of the event. Sellers choose whether to discount items on the final day of the sale. The sellers also decide whether they want unsold items returned at the end of the sale or donated to local community organizations.

Families involved in the sale can choose to work a shift as a clerk, cashier or stocker in order to participate in early-bird shopping.

Public shopping hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Some items are marked for half-price clearance on Saturdays.

The Elizabethtown sale will be the fall/winter event, featuring warm clothing, Halloween costumes, winter coats and holiday wear in addition to all the other bargains available. There is no admission charge to attend.

Since there is no mask mandate in effect in Kentucky, shoppers will not be required to wear a face covering, Upton said.
