Vietnam vets celebrated by DAR

“To each of the veterans here, I can’t thank you enough for your service to this country, whether you served abroad or at home,” said Julia Hood, KSDAR vice regent. “Your return home 50 years ago should have been much different, so we are here today to celebrate you.”

Hood said the veterans weren’t the only ones being celebrated.

“In addition to your service, I want to thank your loved ones that are here with you who held down the fort and prayed for your safe return,” she said.

Guests recited the Pledge of Allegiance as well as the Preamble to the Constitution and the American’s Creed.

Lt. Col. William Gehr recited a poem called “Toast to the Flag” and said he was reminded of the flag’s symbolism.

“When I look at the flag, I remember parts of that American Creed, and that’s kind of the essence of what that flag stands for,” Gehr said. “Liberty, justice, a nation that has forged ahead and built upon its previous history and become, I think, the strongest nation that has ever existed in the world.”

Veterans were given a certificate, a commemorative pin, a hat and a medal.

Veterans were called up individually to be recognized. They were able to collect their gifts and shake hands with DAR members and local dignitaries as well.
