Clay Games threw for 184 yards and two touchdowns, and the ground game racked up 206 yards rushing as No. 1 ranked Elizabethtown opened the Class 3-A playoffs Friday night with a 63-7 victory over visiting Thomas Nelson.
The victory sets up a second-round showdown with Bardstown Friday night at Elizabethtown.
Games got the scoring started in the first quarter, connecting with Kam Sherrard on a 61-yard scoring pass. Sherrard made it 13-0 on the Panthers next possession with a 7-yard run, but the point after was blocked.
The defense scored on the next possession as Khia Sherrard intercepted a pass on a fake punt and scooted into the end zone on the 28-yard return with 1:37 left in the quarter.
Over the first 10:23 of the opening period, Elizabethtown ran just four plays, but led 21-0.
The Generals bounced back on its next possession when Braden Smith scored on a 10-yard run and added the PAT to make it 21-7.
It was all Elizabethtown from there, as the Panthers closed the half with 21 points.
Khia Sherrard scored on a 33-yard run to make it 28-7 and Games connected with Alandre Murphy who out-jumped his defender to make a 4-yard catch to push the score to 35-7.
With 1:34 left, fullback Ryder Gregory scored from 1-yard out to make it 42-7.
Kam Sherrard opened the third period with a 7-yard touchdown run to start the running clock.
Camden Williams made it 56-7 with a 72-yard punt return and Tyrin Jurnette closed the scoring in the fourth period, capping a brilliant 19-yard scoring run by diving and hitting the pylon.
Kicker Brandon Parsons followed Jurnette’s score with his eighth PAT of the night.
Elizabethtown ran its record to 9-0. Thomas Nelson finished the year at 1-7.
