A 86-year-old man was killed Tuesday afternoon trying to cross Ky. 1600 on ATV, according to the Kentucky State Police preliminary investigation.

J. Raphael “Jack” Hughes of Vine Grove died of injuries sustained when his ATV entered the path of a 1995 Ford Explorer driven by Alyssa Hammock, 19, of Guston, a KSP Post 4 statement said.

The report said Hughes was transported to University of Hospital in Louiville with serious injuries and later pronounced dead by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

Hammock was not injured, according to police.

The collision occcurred at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 10000 block of Ky. 1600 west of Rineyville.

A U.S. Army veteran and a farmer, Hughes is survived by his wife, Jane, three children, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Brigid Catholic Church in Vine Grove where he was a member. Arrangements are being handled by Chism Family Funeral Home.
