After seeing seven-year head coach Donnie Swiney step down earlier this month, Elizabethtown has named a new girls’ head basketball coach in Amber Courtney.
Courtney joins the Panthers as the first woman head coach in the program’s history, and brings along with her a vastly experienced resume.
After graduating from Indiana University Southeast and ending her playing days in 2005, she received her first coaching job in 2009 with North Bullitt High School.
Following her tenure with the Eagles, Courtney moved on to Bardstown High School, where the Bullitt County native spent nine seasons as the head coach, amassing a record of 179-95 while turning them into a perennial district power and averaging 20 wins per season.
“We are pleased with the process and diligent work of our hiring committee over the last few weeks,” Elizabethtown Athletic Director Alex Todd said in a news release. “There were some consistent items that we were looking for in the next head coach. The committee felt like Coach Courtney checked all those boxes.”
Courtney joins E’town after they finished as 17th district runners-up and a 13-19 overall record last season, and is set to inherit key players in Brooklyn Brown and Emerson and Harper Gregory.
“It is obvious there is a lot of tradition there,” Courtney said about Elizabethtown. “The love and passion in the community for both academics and athletics, it just felt like it would be a great place to be.”
She also will add her two daughters to the roster in sophomore Miyah Courtney and eighth grader Miliah Courtney.
The older Miyah played in all 31 games for Bardstown this past season, averaging a team-high 12.7 points per game.
The younger Miliah played in 30 games for the Tigers last season, averaging 4.1 points per game.
“We are excited about what Coach Courtney will bring to our program, which is filled with pride and a rich history,” Todd said. “All of us at EHS are committed to ensuring our girls’ basketball program is successful in this coaching transition.”
“I want to carry on the success and bring back the tradition,” Courtney said. “I am excited to come to E’town. I think it will make me a better coach, and it’s an awesome opportunity for me.”
