Track favorites North Hardin’s boys and the Elizabethtown girls took care of business Tuesday in their respective regions with big wins.
The Panthers competed in the Class 2A Region 2 meet in Bardstown and easily topped second place Warren East, 115.50-86.
Senior standout Ella Johnson won three individual events, capturing the 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter races while also helping the 2 x 800 relay team to a second-place finish.
Eighth-grader Mya Moore also won three events, taking first in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes.
The Trojans were runaway winners in the Class 3A Region 2 meet at Meade County, tallying 168 points as compared to 97 for second place Central Hardin.
Devin Sealey and Shawn Rose helped North Hardin to the win with their performances.
Sealey won the high jump and was third in the long jump. He is one of the favorites to win the high jump at the state meet.
“Devin is in top form and we expect to carry this momentum to the state championship June 3,” coach Travis Taylor said. “There will be some great competition in the high jump but I’m confident he will rise to the occasion and use that competition to push him harder.”
Rose was first in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and a member of a winning relay team. He set personal records in the two dash races.
“Every relay team we had qualified for the state,” coach Aaron Coney said. “This was with me making major changes at the last minute. The guys just took care of business.”
Central Hardin finished second in both the boys and girls competitions. Coach Tim Pennington’s girls were behind only Greenwood.
“It was a nail biter most of the night as I kept looking at live results on both the girls and boys as we only had 32 athletes to compete,” Pennington said.
Serena McNeilly won four individual events to help the girls.
“The girls’ relays — 4 x 100 / 4 x 200 wins gave us a nice boost and our 4 x 400 finished second, but we ended up with a school record that’s been standing since 1997 so it’s always great to see records updated,” Pennington said.
He was pleasantly surprised by Alicia Irwin’s third place finish in the 200-meter dash, running it in a personal best time of 26.99.
Kase VanBlijengurgh won the two hurdle races to help the boys’ cause with teammate Gavin Scanlon finishing third in the 110-meter race.
